Final thoughts of the month

Written 05/04/2025

Compared with last month, I pretty much knew WHAT my final piece would like (a daffodil emulating the style of Mary Delany). However, the medium was NOT my friend. It was very awkward and cumbersome and I felt like more than with painting that I was limited by the materials available to me. I could only afford so many sheets of plain card - I think if I were to do this again I would use textured paper as that probably would have given more depth and colour variation (also paper is thinner so would have stuck better to the background and been easier to cut. And the glue I used simple Pritt Stick (since that's what I had)

What I did like was painting on the card, since I was painting on a solid colour I felt like I could incorporate the base to my advantage and give nice gradiants which isn't something so visually pleasing on white backgrounds. I also thing the piece came together after painting and the advantage of the scalpel cut card was my edges were very smooth which looked very... clean (especially AFTER painting funnily enough)

I do think I fell victim to stylisation this month, probably because the MEDIUM was not one I was comfortable with I fell back on my default STYLE. Maybe I should try more collage? Or do more outside my medium comfort zone of drawing and painting?

Overall I would say I didn't necessarily enjoy this month but I was happy with the end result.
